DECADE (TS-190)
APPLICATION
INSTRUCTIONS
(6/12/10)
This information has
been prepared for
use with Decade Deck
Paint on properly
prepared surfaces.
All surfaces must be
thoroughly clean,
free of mold,
mildew, algae and
other contaminates.
Wood must be
thoroughly dry
before application.
Since materials and
previously applied
paint, sealers and
stains vary we
recommend doing a
test patch area
applied and allowed
to cure for 72 hours
before applying
Decade Paint or
primer to an entire
deck. DO NOT apply
Decade over water
repellant sealers
which will prevent
proper adhesion.
When wood has been
sealed use an oxalic
acid-based cleaner
to remove the sealer
in its entirety.
Sanding is
recommended but not
required as surface
conditions permit.
Decade
can
be used over
dimensional decking
materials including
Pine, Cedar,
Redwood, Fir,
Cyprus, Pressure
Treated woods and
synthetic decking
materials without
primer, however
Decade Primer
(TS-180) is often
used to promote
adhesion and provide
a sound base. Steel,
fiberglass aluminum
must be primed with
an Etching Primer;
call us for details.
Do not apply
when rain is
forecast within 48
hours. Never paint
above 85F, in hot
direct sunlight or
when humidity is
forecasted to be at
or above 75%. Best
results will be
obtained by
roller-coat but
Decade is brushable
and may be sprayed.
1. REPAIRS: All
repairs should be
completed and
allowed to cure
prior to cleaning,
sanding or the
application of
Decade paint. Be
sure all repair
materials are
paintable before
use.
2. STRIPPING &
CLEANING: Peeling
paint may be removed
using TS-646 Triple
Strength Paint
Stripper according
to label directions.
For best results
recommend sanding
(150-220 grit) which
promotes adhesion.
When applying over
sound prepared paint
recommend using
Decade Yearly
Cleaner (TS-685) as
a pre-paint cleaner
according to label
directions. Yearly
Cleaner removes
dirt, grime, grease,
wax and oil. Rinse
carefully and allow
to dry thoroughly.
3. PRIMER: Decade is
self-priming in one
coat, so Decade
Primer (TS-180) is
optional. It is used
to promote adhesion
and provide a sound
base improving color
consistency. Mix
primer thoroughly
before use. Apply
one coat using a
3/8” non-shedding
roller cover at a
rate of 150-200
square feet per
gallon. Allow to dry
12- 48 hours before
over-coating, sand
after 72 hours.
4. ADD PRO-TEX
NON-SLIP: Pro-Tex is
a wax-based pour-in
additive that
produces a slip
resistant finish.
Its use is optional.
When adding Pro-Tex
to Decade Paint;
pour in 16 ounces (1
pack) to one gallon.
Stir container for 2
minutes with a stir
stick or for 1
minute with a high
speed mixer.
5. APPLYING DECADE
PAINT: Mix contents
thoroughly. Apply
one coat evenly
using a 5/8”-3/4”
roller cover at a
rate of 100 square
feet per gallon.
NOTE: Apply evenly
avoiding ponding.
Allow to dry 24
hours before
allowing foot
traffic. IMPORTANT:
Keep dry for 48
hours.
NOTE: Recommend
applying maintenance
coats as needed
according to above
directions. Dry and
cure times vary with
the weather,
temperature,
thickness of
application and
color. Allow extra
dry and cure time
for dark colors.
Concrete surfaces
must be treated with
TS-695 Etching
Cleaner, muriatic
acid or the
equivalent. The
maximum moisture
content for concrete
and masonry is 10%
with less than 4%
hydrostatic
pressure.
We recommend using
the VaporGuage
calcium chloride
moisture test to
establish actual
vapor transmission
and pH. Failure to
adhere to all
recommendations
voids the Decade 50
Year Limited
Warranty so please
be sure to follow
Application
Instructions, label
directions, and
standard industry
practices carefully.
